Adoption Rights for the Adoptee
- Adoptees have the right to know they are adopted and a right to full knowledge of their origins, ethnic and religious background.
- There have been debates on whether or not to open birth records to adult adoptees. The laws are different in each state. For example, adoptees age 21 and older born in Delaware may apply for a copy of their original birth certificate. Kansas adoption records have never been closed. In Missouri, birth certificates are released for those with deceased birth parents but parents' relatives can stop the release.
- Adoptions can be annulled and, in that case, the birth certificate in unsealed.
