What Percent Is Deducted for Social Security Tax on a Paycheck With the IRS?
FICA Withholding
- FICA withholding is a combination of taxes taken out of paychecks for Social Security as well as Medicare. As of 2011, the total amount of FICA withholding is 7.65 percent, but only 6.2 percent is for Social Security and the remaining 1.45 percent goes to Medicare. However, Social Security has a maximum contribution ceiling, but Medicare does not; FICA deductions will change when annual salaries exceed that ceiling.
