Chase Warns Customers of Lost Tape Containing Personal Information

1
The loss of a tape containing confidential customer information has prompted Chase Bank senior vice president Patricia O.
Baker to send out notification letters to potentially affected customers warning them to be on the lookout for identity theft.
The letters, which were dated August 13 in their letterheads, inform customers that a computer tape with information on it had gone missing at a "secure offsite storage facility.
" "Electronic files on the tape may have included your name, address and Social Security Number, but did not include any banking or financial information.
" The letter adds that while the tape was initially received by the vendor at the facility, subsequent searches at the facility have been unable to find the missing tape.
Additionally, it states that information from the tape can only be read using special equipment and that there was "no evidence to indicate any of the information has been viewed or used inappropriately.
" Still, Chase suggests that those potentially affected keep track of their account statements and credit reports to make sure that no unauthorized transactions or changes to the account take place.
Additionally, contacting one of the three credit bureau agencies and requesting a 90-day fraud alert to make sure that know unwanted activity goes untracked is suggested as well.
As part of the bank's apology, the letter states that customers would also be offered a free one-year subscription to Chase Identity Protection, its credit-monitoring service.
According to CUInfoSecurity, news of the missing tape was first reported by Louisville, Kentucky's ABC television affiliate.
It is not know how long the tape has been missing or if it contained credit and/or banking information.
