Write With Flavor
The vacant rundown house smells of old disintegrated food.
The shriveling pumpkins are putrefying and attracting humongous buzzing flies.
I feel sick to my stomach.
The neighbors hadn't seen anyone at the house for months.
The hair on the back of my neck is standing on end.
The wither fall arrangement still hangs cock-eyed on the weathered front door.
This house seemed as if it was happy home some time ago.
I wondered who had lived here before? A mom, a dad.
How many little feet had pitter pattered across this dirty grungy floor? There's no way around it.
I'm scared.
My imagination carries me away.
Where is my older brother when I need him? It's October and the low clouds and fog smoother the ground.
There is a slight breeze blowing the brown crunchy leaves across the lawn.
I don't belong here.
I shouldn't have come alone.
What was I hoping to find? I decide to use my imagination and put it to work for me instead of against me.
I see myself as a ghost, yeah that's right I'm Casper - You know Casper the friendly ghost.
I can fly in and out of every room.
Zooming around as fast as I choose to fly.
If I see anybody I'll greet them with a smile.
I can show them the way around the house and back out the door.
So what's the point? My kids have had a writing class as part in their curriculum this past year.
Now they are in middle school and are continuing on with learning how to write with flavor.
They start with an idea, do their rough drafts.
Making many rewrites along the way until they have a quality finished paper.
They gave me the challenge to author some thing and make sure it was good.
So what's the point? The point I'm trying to show them is if they will use a Thesaurus, they can find many more descriptive verbs.
Verbs help you get to the point quicker and heck maybe they will even delight the teacher a little more along the way.
The goal is to grab your reader's attention and take them on a journey in the story.
No, I know I'm not the best...
I just wanted to show my kids I could write a simple descriptive story or at least the start of one and get it published.
