Players
You are too predictable! Here, take the final twist.
Bullshit! I am the hero. And this is Abbas Mustan film, I will bring the final twist! You have to die bad man.
*This is just an adaptation of bizarre stuff happening in Players.
Abbas-Mustan definitely stun you with Players - but more with absurdity than thrill.
But before going to the bad stuff, heres some good stuff about Players. The movie is stylish starting from the slick camerawork to plush locations of Amsterdam, Russia, Goa, lavish cars and mean machines everything about the movie looked good and shouted attitude and oomph. The locations are beautiful and they look even more enchanting through Ravi Yadavs camera. He deserves a pat on the back for the aerial shots of the robbery and car chase. If you have not seen the original Italian Job, you might like Players.
Taking inspiration from the west is not uncommon in Bollywood and director duo Abbas-Mustan has been a pro at that. But then what went wrong with Players, which is an official remake of 2003s Italian Job? Well, our directors chucked away the idea of remaking the classic and played smart by Bollywoodising it with juvenile twists and turns (which once start, stop only when you are irritated). Result? Players a cringe-worthy, foolish attempt at recreating a classic.
However, Italian Job (of both 1969 & 2003) still lies at the heart of Players with stuff like grandiose robbery, a team of skilled and sharp thieves, slick execution, traitor in the gang, double crossing, murders, revenge and of course a Mini Cooper climax making the core. But then we are Bollywood. We love to sing, we love humour (irrespective of how bad it is) and we are good people. Even our thieves cannot be evil. So to look bad we carry carved guns, wear leather jackets straight from MJs Bad video & thats it! Stealing business is only to make an orphanage or help our paralysed daughter. Come on!
So, in Players Charlie Mascarhenas hatches the master plan to rob Romanian gold from a Russian train. His guru Victor Dada (Vinod Khanna) comes to his rescue. He is a thief who has turned into a professor for Indian Police Department. Doctor, please inhe bachaiye, humein abhi inse bahut kuch seekhna hai, says a cop to the doc and thats enough to tell Victors worth. To execute the plan Charlie gets a team including a automobile engineer cum item-girl Ria (Bipasha Basu), who is in love with Charlie, an illusionist Roomie (Bobby Deol), a prosthetics expert Mehra (Omi Vaidya), an explosive maker Bilal (Sikander Kher), a hacker Spider (Neil Nitin Mukesh), a software engineer and Victor Dadas daughter Neha (Sonam Kapoor). As expected they pull of the deed! But what is a heist film sans a traitor. So, one of the team players double crosses the rest and triggers of a series of Abbas-Mustan cchhap desperate attempts to surprise you but to no avail.
While, the first half of the movie is still watchable despite the absence of any edge-of-the-seat moments, it is the second half where the narrative dwindles from being predictable to boring. A thriller ought to be fast but Players is sloppy. A tailor made screenplay to suit the director is the biggest flaw of Players. Missing details and easy way out are a few common sightings in the movie. For instance, for our heroes planning a heist as big as deceiving Russian Army was a cakewalk or for that matter all they need is a skimpily clad girl to bring Military personnel out of his pants and into the doom. No denying that the train robbery (that reminds ofRoop Ki Rani Choron Ka Raja) and the chase at the end deserve accolades, but when your inspiration is one of the best thrillers, writers do need to get a little real to make the entire setting credible and not phoney.
Dialogues range from being unimpressive to tacky including, Bada player banna hai toh bada risk lena hi padta hai. Here's another cheeky one, "Wo India ka sabse bada orphanage banana chahte the, jissey koi or Victor ya Charlie na Bane." Are we still in the 80s?Though we like the Behra-Mehrachemistrybetween Sikander Kher and Omi Vaidya but Players comedy looked as forced as the emotions on actors faces. The gags are poor and the emotional scenes areridiculous, specially the love track towards the climax.
Theres nothing great about the performances either. Abhishek Bachchan can sleep walk through these kinds of roles now. Right from the days of Zameen, Dhoom, Dus and Dum Maaro Dum, he has been doing the same acting. Still he was the hero of the film, who can pronounce mourning as morning! Bobby Deol is wasted with just two dialogues in his kitty. Bipasha Basu, is like a trophy heroine who has stayed with the directors since Ajnabee-Race and now Players. Her Bikini performance is great and acting was decent. Sikander Kher should look for an alternate character, if he continues with that permanent expression. Omi Vaidyas Silencer act looks over stretched now. Though he gave us one genuine laughter when he says, Itni badi jagah hai, kahin pe bhi so jao. Sonam Kapoor looks as glam as Sunny Deol in those padded jackets. But when it comes to playing a hacker she doesnt go beyond clicking those keyboard keys. And seducing is not Sonams cuppa! s performance is average and looks repetitive too. It seems suffering with OCD of using his eyebrows. Johhny Lever is back in action with his MC BC act. We loved his desi-firang family. Pritams music is a letdown, which is again unusual in an Abbas-Mustan flick.
Players' tag line might shout out Go for Gold, but as they say all that glitters is not gold, and were afraid its a game over for Players!
