  For many, a visit to one or more haunted houses is an essential part of the Halloween season. Creepy characters, eerie environments and scary special effects are key to any truly scary haunted attraction. To the North

• Two of the area's orchards host attractions during Halloween. Wiard's Orchards in Ypsilanti hosts an annual Night Terrors event. Attractions include the Ultimate Haunted Barn, the Asylum, The Mineshaft, Hayrides of the Lost, The Labyrinth and Alien Caged Clowns. The attraction boasts over 115 live "monsters" and is said to be set among truly haunted fields and buildings.
  
  Apple Charlie's Orchard in New Boston offers a haunted barn experience as well as a hayride suitable for children.

• Only 30 minutes to the south is Toledo, Ohio, home to two of the area's most popular attractions. Chainsaw Creek Haunted Attraction is a four-house attraction that includes The Black Swamp, The County Morgue and The Asylum, as well as a 3-D haunt called Circus of the Dead.
  
  The Hell's Gate Attraction is a new scare attraction created by experienced professionals. The net proceeds for this attraction benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

• The Haunting, a haunted house in Adrian, changes every year to bring visitors a brand new scare. It includes 50 haunted rooms plus a maze. This attraction will celebrate its 16th year in 2010. The Haunting includes a full-service gift shop that includes branded apparel as well as makeup and masks. Group discounts are available.
