    Radiator

    • 1). Check the radiator if the engine is overheating. Wait until the engine has cooled before proceeding.

    • 2). Check the level of coolant in the reservoir and radiator.

    • 3). Start the engine again if the coolant is at an adequate level. If the engine continues to overheat, take to a Yamaha dealer for further inspection.

    • 4). Check for leakage in the cooling system if the coolant level is low.

    • 5). Take the R1 to a Yamaha dealer for more serious repairs if leakage is present.

    • 6). Add coolant and restart the engine if there is no leakage. If the engine still overheats, take the bike to a Yamaha dealer.

    Fuel System

    • 1). Check the gasoline level in the fuel tank if engine fails or will not start.

    • 2). Move on to the compression system check if there is an adequate amount of fuel.

    • 3). Refill with premium unleaded gasoline if there is not enough fuel. If the engine still does not start, move to the next section.

    Compression

    • 1). Use the electric starter to check the compression on the YZF-R1

    • 2). Move to the next section if there is compression.

    • 3). Have a Yamaha dealer inspect this system if there is no compression.

    Ignition

    • 1). Take out the spark plugs and inspect the electrodes.

    • 2). Take the bike to a Yamaha dealer for repairs if the electrodes are dry.

    • 3). Wipe clean with a dry cloth if they are wet.

    • 4). Check the spark plugs for damage once the electrodes are dry. If they are broken, replace with NGK CR9EIA9 or DENSO IU27D spark plugs.

    • 5). Set the spark plug gap to between 0.03 and 0.04 inches.

    • 6). Open the throttle halfway and try the electric starter.

    • 7). Move to the check of the R1's battery if the engine still won't work.

    Battery

    • 1). Use the electric starter and listen to the engine turn over.

    • 2). Take the R1 to a dealer if the engine turns over quickly. This means that the battery is good and that other repairs may be needed.

    • 3). Tighten battery connections if the engine turns over slowly, as battery connections may be faulty, damaged, or loose.

    • 4). Charge the battery to 12 volts if uncharged.

    • 5). Try the electric starter again. If the engine still turns over slowly, take the R1 in for repairs.
