Healthy Snacks Kids Can Make
- 1). Make trail mix by combining low-sugar cereal, raisins, granola and nuts in a large bowl. If your kids don't like nuts or allergies are a problem, you can substitute a small amount of dried fruit or add in another type of cereal. Pour the mix into a small storage bag to preserve freshness.
- 2). Use celery sticks, peanut butter and raisins to make "ants on a log." Spread peanut butter on one side of the celery stick and arrange raisins on top. You can also substitute sliced bananas for the celery.
- 3). Create your own yogurt parfaits. In a glass, make layers of your favorite flavor of nonfat yogurt with granola, raisins and fresh or frozen fruit. Fresh blueberries and raspberries work especially well, but there are plenty of fruits that taste great with yogurt. Let kids experiment with different combinations of flavors.
- 4). Pour your child's favorite kind of 100 percent fruit juice into an ice cube tray. Cover the tray with two layers of tin foil and poke toothpicks straight into each cube as mini Popsicle-type sticks. Put the tray in the freezer. When it's been in there for several hours, you can remove the tray and take out your fruit juice ice pops. This is a fun way for kids to enjoy juice in moderation--just make sure they're old enough to be careful with the toothpick.
- 5). Let kids pick out a flavor of sugar-free gelatin. Prepare it for them in a 13 x 9 inch pan. Once the gelatin is set, give kids an assortment of cookie cutters so they can make fun gelatin shapes.
