Workplace warning signs are currently a common sight in several workplaces since they are essential in notifying the staff of the safety measures where a danger still exists. Just like the Personal Protection Equipment, warning signs can be the final resort because they can be ignored and hence the danger can still result into an injury. Preferably the other control measures should make it not possible to be injured nevertheless that is not usually not possible therefore the signs can be used to display a risk and the type of action that should be taken to minimize the possibility of an injury occurring.

iii) Your Safety and Health policy

This is a policy that identifies the type of responsibilities that each employee has at all the departments within the organization. Generally, a summary of the health and safety policy is displayed and an entire copy of the policy is made available to all the staff.

Majority of the workplace warning signs still exist and the UK Safety Signs and Signals (Health and Safety signs) regulations of 1995 aimed to regulate the minimum requirements to provide safety signs in a workplace.

The following are 4 key types of safety signs that you will see in many workplaces:

i) Prohibition signs

As the name suggests, they are signs that prevents you from undertaking anything that will cause an injury to your or others. These signs are normally round with a diagonal red stripe and a red border. For instance, these signs include no pedestrians, no naked flames and no smoking.

ii) Warning workplace signs are triangular with a black border on the yellow background

These signs show a danger signs which is present around, for example slippery surface, electricity or toxic.

iii) Safe Condition

These conditions provide details on the first aid locations, rescue facilities and fire exist eg stretchers or evacuation chairs. They are rectangular in shape with a white picture on the green background.

iv) Compulsory signs are round white pictures on the blue background

These are signs which will tell you some things that you must do, for example, wear eye protection, wear ear protection or wear safety headgear or footwear.

Signs with pictures are also very important when many languages may be in use e.g. warehouses, hotels and are easier to understand visually. 

Workplace warning signs are very important for safety purposes nevertheless you should make sure that there are very many signs shown at one point since they will be very confusing and its objective is to make it very easy to understand.
