Immigration Path to Citizenship
- Check the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) website. The Guide to Naturalization details eligibility requirements and provides step-by-step instruction.
- Complete the application. Include the required supporting documentation, application fee and photographs. After USCIS receives your application, it will contact you and schedule an appointment for you to get fingerprinted in one of its offices.
- USCIS will contact you to schedule an interview where you will answer questions regarding your background, character and your desire to become an American citizen.
- You will be asked 10 questions about American history, society, principles and form of government. The questions also test your knowledge of English. You need to answer six questions correctly to pass. You can retake the test once.
- Candidates who successfully complete the steps above will be scheduled to attend a ceremony to take the Oath of Allegiance to the United States. This concludes your naturalization process. USCIS will mail the Certificate of Naturalization to you.
