So, your boss knows you're gay and you know for sure that he bats for your team. You may want to take it into extra innings, but a work romance can quickly turn into career disaster. Consider these tips:

• Since you're already out to him, the only thing in the closet is your attraction. (Click here if you're not out to your gay boss). When you date your boss, you blur the line between your personal and professional lives, which can quickly turn into a strike out. If the romance goes wrong, it could mean the end of your job (or at least the beginnings of an uncomfortable work environment). If things go well, you both may have to manage your co-workers perceptions of favoritism, rumors and the change in work dynamics. So, think things through before approaching your boss. Remember, he is in a position of power.

• If you do decide to move forward, approach your gay boss casually. If he weren't your boss I'd suggest you start with a little flirtation; but since his first thoughts will be on how to maintain a professional work environment, I suggest being more direct.
• Open up a conversation with him. Express your interest in hanging out outside of the office. Let him know that you would like to grow your relationship beyond the office. Assure him that you are aware of the dangers of office romances and that you know it can cause tension in the workplace. Also, assure him that you plan on being discreet.
• Give him time to consider pursuing a romance with you. If he does come back with an agreement to go out with you, reiterate how important it is that you two maintain a professional relationship in the office. Also, discuss the potential backlash if your romance doesn't work out.
• Note that the employment harassment policies on your job apply for both the management and the employees. There is the possibility that your boss may be uncomfortable with your advances and may consider them sexual harassment. Tread lightly and be absolutely sure you want to pursue a work romance before going down that road. The last thing you need is to be outed in a human resources sexual harassment case.

• You may like your boss or just want to connect with him, but ultimately your job is at stake so take extreme caution before pursuing a relationship.
