How to Color Hair While Taking Iodine
- 1). Speak to your doctor. Although there are no known issues between taking iodine and using hair color, you should talk to your physician about your individual situation. If you are taking a large dose of iodine, your doctor may recommend that you wait to color your hair.
- 2). Schedule an appointment with a hairstylist to get your hair colored. Coloring your hair at a salon is more expensive, but your stylist can make sure the color is applied correctly and safely.
- 3). Purchase your hair color, if you want to color your hair at home. Though there are no indications, you should find hair color that is ammonia-free to prevent a reaction from taking your iodine. A number of hair colors are made without ammonia. There are even some products that claim to be all-natural, without harmful chemicals.
- 4). Perform an allergy test. It is recommended that you perform a skin allergy test before every color application. This is even more important if you are taking a new supplement, such as iodine.
- 5). Mix a very small amount of hair color according to package directions. Apply the mixture to the inside of your elbow with a cotton ball. Let the area dry and do not wash or cover for 48 hours. If you experience any reactions to the test spot, do not color your hair.
- 6). Follow package directions and protect your skin from the hair color. Leave on only during the recommended time and rinse completely when finished.
