Chakalaka Soup
- The soup is primarily made with such vegetables as tomatoes, carrots, onions, cabbage and black beans. Some of the spices that are used in the soup are garlic, ginger, cilantro and curry powder.
- When chakalaka soup is served as the main course, it may be paired with mealie pap (also spelled mielie pap), which is a cornmeal mush, to make it more filling. It's also served with bread or a maize dish called samp.
- Sometimes chakalaka is served as a sauce for grilled meats. It's also used as a table condiment and can be eaten on its own as a side dish. Chakalaka is served both hot and cold.
- Making chakalaka primarily consists of frying the onions, peppers and spices together in oil, then adding the tomatoes and letting them simmer. The rest of the vegetables are added and cooked for several minutes, then salt and pepper.
