Connecticut and the Civil War Sesquicentennial
The state of Connecticut was not the site of any Civil War battles, but the state contributed many soldiers to the Union Army. And important facilities for the war effort, shipyards and armories, were located in Connecticut.
The state will be commemorating the Civil War Sesquicentennial with reenactments at historical sites as well as museum exhibits.
Central Connecticut State University hosts a comprehensive site that pulls together a variety of resources related to the state's commemoration of the Civil War Sesquicentennial.
The Connecticut Historical Society is a private not-for-profit organization devoted to preserving the state's history. The organization will be commemorating the Civil War Sesquicentennial.
The New England Civil War Museum is located in a former Grand Army of the Republic hall in Rockville, Connecticut. It has a collection of Civil War artifacts and a library of material related to the war.
The museum, which is operated largely by volunteers, is open two Sundays each month, and the schedule is posted on the museum's web site.More »
Fort Trumbull, in New London, Connecticut, is a large masonry fort constructed from 1839 to 1852. During the Civil War it was a very active recruiting and training depot for the 14th Connecticut Volunteer Infantry Regiment. The 14th Connecticut fought in major Civil War battles including Antietam and Gettysburg.
Fort Trumbull is now a Connecticut state park, and the fort itself contains exhibits of artillery, restored 19th century living quarters, and a visitors center with exhibits showcasing the entire military history of the fort.More »
The Middletown, Connecticut home of Civil War hero General Joseph F. K. Mansfield, who was mortally wounded while leading troops in combat at the Battle of Antietam, is a museum as well as the home of the Middlesex County Historical Museum.
The Mansfield House has a permanent exhibit on Middletown and the Civil War which features artifacts including diaries, letters, and soldier's gear. The Mansfield House also hosts various historical programs, including those related to the Civil War.More »
