There are many reasons your dog may have oily, greasy fur, a condition known as oleosa. Some of the reasons for that "greasy look" may be parasites, allergies, diet, yeast and lifestyle. It is best to contact your veterinarian prior to use of any of medicated shampoos so a definitive cause can be diagnosed. - One of the most recommended ingredients for stripping grease and oils from a dog's coat is benzoyl peroxide, which is also anti-bacterial, keratolytic (removes dead skin cells) and anti-pruritic (anti-itch). As with the rest of these shampoos, for optimum effectiveness, lather your wet dog and leave the shampoo on for at least 10 to 15 minutes, then rinse well. This process will help the shampoo to penetrate the skin and fur follicles. Frequency of shampooing your dog with any of these medicated shampoos depends upon the severity of the greasy or oily condition. One to three times a week is usually prescribed by your veterinarian.
- Pyoben is another great degreasing shampoo with benzoyl peroxide along with slow-release ingredients for extended protection. This antibacterial, antimicrobial formula is often recommended by vets for the treatment of skin disorders associated with excess grease and oils. Use as directed.
- This is one of those human shampoos recommended for use on dogs with greasy, oily skin and coat disorders that may be due to yeast colonization. Speak with your veterinarian for specific directions for your dog.
- This is often recommended for dogs with extremely greasy, oily skin and coats. Besides stripping the excess grease, this tar shampoo will ease skin inflammation, scales and itching. Lather your dog, leaving the shampoo on for up to 15 minutes before rinsing thoroughly. This can be used twice weekly.
- Etiderm is an antibacterial, degreasing antiseptic and keratoplastic (replenishes skin cells) shampoo. To use, lather your dog, rinse and repeat, leaving the Etiderm on for five to 10 minutes for the ingredients to penetrate. Use two to three times a week for the first four weeks, then once a week.
