Spring Season

• Spring season is the largest of the two turkey hunting seasons in Texas. It is the only season hunters are allowed to bag both Rio Grande and Eastern turkey. Zones and dates are split by the area of the state. Rio Grande turkey youth season is divided into two day periods, one in March and another in May, in both the 101 counties that make up the north zone and 54 counties of the south zone. There is a bag limit of one for Rio Grande turkey in 8 counties. Spring Rio Grande turkey season dates range from March through May. Hunters can bag Eastern turkey in April only in the 43 counties of east Texas.
  
  

Fall Season

• During the fall season, hunters are only allowed to hunt Rio Grande turkey. Archery is legal in the early portions of the season, with firearm season following. The fall season dates vary each year beginning in October and ending at the latest in February. Like the spring season, fall offers two short open seasons for youth. During fall months, the north zone consists of 122 counties while the south comprises 26. At times, a handful of designated counties have a longer season.
  
  

Guided Hunts

• Hunters not familiar with hunting turkey in Texas can hire a guide based on the type of turkey they choose to hunt. Guides not only assist hunters in finding turkey, but also make sure hunters are properly licensed and tag and process each turkey according to state regulations.
  
  

Eastern Turkey Regulations

• During spring season there are mandatory check stations for hunters who have bagged Eastern turkey. The check stations are located throughout the state and are listed annually on the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department website. Counties that offer a spring Eastern turkey season are not open for fall season hunts.
