How to Hunt White-Tailed Deer in New England
- 1). Obtain the proper licensing and permits for the state in New England that you will be white-tailed deer hunting in and always follow the state enforced rules. For example, in Massachusetts you must obtain a hunting license that has to be displayed when hunting and you must be wearing at least 500 square inches of hunter orange on your head, chest and back.
- 2). Find an area within New England that shows signs of white-tailed deer activity. In New England it is best to start searching for a spot in July because it is between two to three months before when the weather will start to turn to fall. Finding a spot in the summer is easiest because there is no hunting going on, and the deer will carve out a home base that they feel safe in. When finding a spot look for things such as rubs and fresh tracks.
- 3). Determine how you want to hunt the white-tailed deer. The two most common ways in New England are with a rifle or a bow. These two styles of hunting might have different seasons depending on where you are in New England. For example, in Vermont bow hunting for white-tailed deer has two seasons. They are the first two weeks in October and the first two weeks in December. Deer rifle season in Vermont runs from mid-November to mid-December.
- 4). Set your tree stand up in your area where you will be hunting. Set the tree stand up a few days before you will be hunting the area. Setting up early will allow your scent to clear away before the day that you actually want to hunt. On the day when you will be hunting be sure to arrive early, before the sun comes up, so you are waiting on the white-tailed deer when they arrive. When you spot a legal white-tailed deer, make sure you have a good shot at it that is within the range of your firearm.
