How to Camp at Mount Rushmore in South Dakota
- 1). Drive west on Highway 244 toward Hill City for approximately two miles.
- 2). Stop at the Wrinkled Rock Climbers Trailhead, which includes a parking lot, pit toilet and climber bivy sites.
- 3). Find level ground away from the parking lot. Put up your tent. The U.S. Forest Service allows dispersed camping, the term for camping away from established campsites in a national forest, for a maximum of 14 days in any one 60-day period.
- 1). Drive approximately six miles west on Highway 244 toward Hill City from Mount Rushmore.
- 2). Pull into the Mount Rushmore KOA or the U.S. Forest Service Willow Creek Horse Camp.
- 3). Find a campsite at Willow Creek Horse Camp, set up your tent and pay the fee at the drop box near the entrance. At the KOA, report to the main office for a campsite.
