How to Install an RV Trailer Hitch
- 1). Determine the needed hitch size. Refer to the RV manufacturer for the towing capacity of your RV. Review the specifications of the object you wish to tow. With this information in hand, determine the hitch rating needed. Possible hitch Classes are I, II, III, IV or V, with I having the least towing capacity and V having the most. The hitch manufacturer will indicate the towing capabilities of each class.
- 2). Remove the old hitch. If the hitch you want to replace has been welded on, you will need a cutting torch to get it off. With the danger of fire, it is better that this job be left to a professional. If the hitch has been bolted on, you will need to carefully unbolt the existing hitch. Because hitches are very heavy, you will need to have support for the hitch when removing. Position a pair of jack stands underneath the hitch for this purpose.
- 3). Align the new hitch. The new hitch must be the same size as the old one. It cannot be any wider or smaller than the one removed. Support the new hitch in place of the old, making sure that the hitch aligns correctly with the frame of the vehicle.
- 4). Attach the hitch. Install the bolts provided by the manufacturer. If none were provided, use Grade 8 bolts or higher.
