How to Paint Wood-Clad Windows

3
    • 1). Clean the wood using mild soap and water. Scrub the wood clad areas with a sponge and rinse with a clean wet sponge once clean. Dry the windows thoroughly.

    • 2). Tape around the windows with painter's tape to protect the adjacent walls from paint. Tape over the glass as well. If you have divided light windows (the windows with lots of cross bars) you will need to tape around each bar individually as well.

    • 3). Determine if there is a prior finish that needs to be removed. A glossy finish underneath will interfere with the paint's ability to bond with the wood. If you need to remove a glossy topcoat, use medium grit sand paper to remove the shine before proceeding.

    • 4). Prime the wood clad windows. This step is necessary if you had a previous topcoat on your windows or if the windows are brand new and not previously painted. Apply the primer with a good quality paint brush, using even strokes. Allow the primer to dry completely.

    • 5). Paint the windows using latex interior paint. Eggshell or semi-gloss paints are preferable for windows since fingerprints and dust can be wiped off easily. Use a paint brush to trim in the areas near walls first, and then follow with the flat surfaces. Apply 2 coats, allowing the first coat to dry before applying the second.
