How Make Your Own Perfectly Brewed Beer
It sounded like a crazy idea when I initially thought of brewing my own beer. I thought, who does that? I had heard of inmates brewing their own jailhouse wine and of moonshiners cooking up their own whisky but never beer. After a chance visit to a home brewing store I found out how fun it was to brew my own beer and how much money I saved in the process.
You don't need a ton of equipment to make your own beer at home. In fact you can make it with only a handle of equipment. You will need: A food grade 10 gallon plastic pail, siphon hose with vinyl tubing and hose clamp, large pot and twelve 2 liter bottles.
As far as the ingredients, that is just as easy to put together. You will need one 40-ounce can of malt extract in whatever flavor of beer you prefer. Some extract comes pre-hopped which as you can imagine gives your beer a more "hoppy" flavor. You will need 1 tsp of brewers' yeast and finally 6-7 cups of plain old white sugar. Though for premium taste I would recommend using 9 cups of corn syrup.
All of these ingredients should set you back about $15. That 15 bucks will make you 70 bottles of beer! Now that is a savings bonanza that Costco can't beat.
The most important thing in brewing is to make sure your equipment and environment is clean. Use warm water and soap, rinse well then sanitize with some common household bleach. Use 1 tsp per gallon of water.
After cleaning your gear you are ready to brew!
1. Pour 10 liters of clean cold water into your 10 gallon pail
2. Gab your biggest pot and bring 7 liters of water to a boil
3. Add your malt extract, stir and cook for 25 minutes
4. Add in your sugar/corn syrup and stir till it dissolves
5. Pour very quickly into your pail the second the sugar/corn syrup dissolves. This is done to add more air. Yeast loves air, it makes things happen faster
6. Pour some bottled drinking water into your pail until the liquid is room temperature
7. Add your yeast, stir it well and cover
Keep your lid closed! Store in a nice safe place at about 70 degrees and it should be done in 7-12 days. To test if your beer is ready, taste it! It should not be sweet and there should not be a lot of bubbles.
To bottle your beer, place your pail higher than your bottles and add 2 tsp of sugar in every bottle. Siphon your beer carefully; do not disturb the sentiment at the bottom of the bottle. Do not fill the bottles to the top they need some air. Your beer will be drinkable in 3-4 days but the longer you let it sit the better it will taste.
