Differences in Dress

• In America, a black-tie affair is less formal than a white-tie affair and about the equivalent of a formal event. True to its name, men should wear tuxedos, with a black tie and cummerbund at a black-tie affair. If a tuxedo is unavailable, an elegant black suit with a black tie and white shirt will also work. The key is to look crisp and put together without being over the top. Women have more options but should generally stick to long, elegant formal gowns. Black-tie affairs also afford a venue to wear and show off expensive jewelry and signature pieces.
  Dress at a "normal" party should be indicated on the invitation. Unless the invitation advises dressing formally, all dress will be more casual than at a black-tie affair.
  
  

At the Party

• All black-tie affairs are different, but they often feature expensive appetizers and fine wine at an established location. Art museums, upscale hotels and botanical gardens are all examples of the venues where black-tie affairs may be held. Many black-tie affairs will also feature several-course sit-down dinners. Since black-tie affairs vary so greatly based on location and purpose, your invitation will give a better sense of what to expect. If attending a black-tie event, use the invitation as a guide, and don't hesitate to ask any questions of your host.
  Because a black-tie affair is a venue to network and be seen, it is important to know what to expect. Making business partnerships is a key goal of the black-tie affair, and mingling with others is expected to a higher degree than at a regular party. The first part of the evening, before dinner, is often dedicated to meeting others while champagne and hors d'oeuvres are served.
  
  

Party With a Purpose

• Unlike a "normal" party, black-tie affairs are often purpose-driven. Fund-raisers, events and grand openings are all types of black-tie affairs. A donation may be expected if attending. Many black-tie affairs, particularly politically driven ones, require purchasing a seat at the event. The price of these seats can be as high as several thousands of dollars, and the money raised from the admission price is given to a cause, either political or humanitarian. For the most part, the fund-raising takes place before the event, though the dinner portion of the evening may also be followed with an auction also meant to raise money for a cause.
