How to Make Christmas Tree Ornaments Out of Borax
- 1). Bend the pipe cleaner into any shape you like. Make sure it will fit suspended into the jar without touching the sides. Tie a loop of string around the shape and slip one end of the loop over the pencil. Rest the pencil over the mouth of the jar so that the ornament is suspended inside. Adjust the loop of string so that the ornament doesn't touch the bottom of the jar.
- 2). Remove the ornament from the jar and pour boiling water into the jar until the level is one or one and half inches from the top. Stir in one cup borax and continue stirring until dissolved. Stir in more borax a spoonful at a time until the water is cloudy and no more borax will dissolve. Replace the ornament, adjusting the string if necessary so that the ornament is completely immersed in the water/borax solution and doesn't touch the bottom or sides of the jar.
- 3). Leave the ornament in the solution undisturbed for several hours or overnight, until the crystalline deposit is as thick as you want it. Remove the ornament and let dry. Spray with acrylic sealant and let dry completely.
