Pergola Types
- The walkway pergola stands by itself and is popular in public areas such as parks and sometimes school grounds. It is designed to offer shade and a place to stand for a while.
- The box pergola is characterized by its grid-like roof and walls. This type of pergola offers little shade, as the roof includes square holes. This pergola is popular among gardeners, who plant vines to grow around it and sometimes totally cover the structure in lush greenery.
- The planter pergola is equally popular among gardeners, except this one commonly covers walkways. It has boxes for plants at the foot of its columns. This makes a nice focal point for a garden when covered in vines with blooming flowers.
- There are many pergolas that are attached to a house or other structure. These are usually erected for social and sheltering purposes. People gather underneath them, often at barbecues or other outdoor occasions. Free-standing pergolas can be built anywhere in a garden. They have the same functions as the attached pergolas but do not depend on another structure to stand.
