The 1980s sported some over-the-top fashion. Girls dressed like Madonna while the guys may have preferred the fashion styles of the pop group Duran Duran. If you preferred an edgier, punk rock style, Adam Ant may have been your artist of choice. Punk rock princess styles included big, colorful hair and spiky accessories that made your mom blush. - Big punk princess hair came in many colors.rack of cotton candy image by Christopher Martin from Fotolia.com
"The bigger the better" was the theme for '80s hair. Extensions weren't as prevalent as they are today, so if you didn't have long hair to tease into a massive tower, you wore a wig. Multi-colored clip-ins were a more drastic option for the punk rock princess; but if you wanted even more shock value, you donned a full wig in cotton candy pink or electric blue that showcased more fashion sense and individuality with a big side of "I don't care what you think" attitude. - Stilettos with black fishnet stockings were the rage.high heels image by Travelfish from Fotolia.com
Accessories were a big part of the punk rock princess style. Colorful hoop earrings to match your hair were all the rage. Multi-pierced ears were a definite must for the punk princess. To wear earrings punk style, asymmetrical was the way to go. You'd wear a larger earring on one side with a line of studs. On the other side, you'd sport a stud or an earring of a different design.
For more accessory options, plastic layered bangle bracelets in different shapes like ovals, circles and even squares and triangles were popular. Belts and necklaces (collars) would be spiked to match your hair. While the belts hung loosely around the waist, the spiked necklace or collar would be fit snugly around your neck. The higher the stilettos, the better. Pairing them with racy black stockings gave you the quintessential punk princess look. - For the punk princess makeup look, you would combine several colors.colors image by Josef F Stuefer from Fotolia.com
In this case, drastic was better. Makeup rules didn't exist for the punk princess and consisted of vibrant colors worn on the cheeks, eyelids and lips. Colors didn't have to match, and in fact it was preferred that they didn't. You could easily keep in punk rock fashion with bright blue eye shadow, yellow eyeliner, bright purple blush and deep black lipstick. - T-shirts were one of the biggest fashion staples of that era. Shirts had to be fitted and designed to show skin. Exposed shoulders or strategic, random cut-outs did the trick. Many T-shirts had a favorite band or "CBGB" printed on them, which was a popular hangout for punk bands and their fans in New York City. Popular colors of punk T-shirts included black, white with black lettering and white shirts with colors "splashed" on them.
