Drowsiness

• Drowsiness is a common side effect of high blood pressure medication. If the medication dose is once a day, ask if it can be taken close to bedtime. If there are multiple doses spread over the course of the day, do not drive, or do anything that would require you to be fully alert. Avoid taking any other medications, whether prescription or over-the-counter, which may cause drowsiness.
  
  

Dry Mouth

• Keep your mouth moist to combat the high blood pressure medication side effect of dry mouth. This can be achieved by sucking on ice chips or sugarless candy, or by chewing sugarless gum.
  
  

Dizziness

• Experiencing dizziness or fainting can be an unsettling side effect of high blood pressure medication. Be careful during hot weather, try to stay as cool as possible and remain inside during the hottest part of the day. When getting up from a lying down position, sit for a minute on the edge of the bed, and then slowly stand.
  
  

Constipation

• Constipation can be a side effect of high blood pressure medications. The best way to combat this side effect is to eat more fiber. Whole grain breads, cereals, fruits and vegetables are great sources of fiber. Talk to the doctor about an exercise routine. If constipation is still a problem, speak with a doctor about a stool softener or laxative.
  
  

Sensitivity to Sunlight

• Some high blood pressure medications can cause sensitivity to sunlight. Avoid being outside in direct sunlight, especially between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. when the sun is at its strongest. Wear sunglasses and a hat, and protect skin with sunblock with an SPF of 15.
  
  

Other Side Effects

• High blood pressure medications can cause other side effects that can be mild to moderate. If you experience an upset stomach, ask the doctor if the medication can be taken with food or milk. Some people may notice an increased sensitivity to cold, have headaches and/or feel the need to urinate more frequently, especially at night.
