How to Wire a Switch to an Outlet for a Garbage Disposal

8
    • 1). Turn off the main electricity at the breaker.

    • 2). Run the electrical wire from the switch to the outlet you desire to wire into.

    • 3). Remove the faceplate from the outlet by unscrewing the center screw. Next, unscrew the outlet by unscrewing the top and bottom screws. Pull the outlet out toward you.

    • 4). Bring your new wire in through the conduit box, and strip back 1 inch of insulation on the wires. Screw the wires onto the outlet, making sure to match color: black with black and white with white. The bare copper wire screws onto the green screw for ground.

    • 5). Screw back the outlet and install the faceplate once done attaching the new wires.

    • 6). Go to your switch and strip back 1 inch of insulation from the wires. Cap together the white wires by holding the two wires together and pushing the cap over them; twist clockwise until tight.

    • 7). Wire the switch in with only the black wires. The black wire from the outlet will screw onto the bottom screw, and the black wire from the garbage disposal will screw onto the top screw. The bare copper wire will screw onto the green grounding screw of the switch.

    • 8). Screw the switch tightly back into the conduit box and install the faceplate. Turn back on the electricity when done and test your installation.
