War Remnants Museum in Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon), Vietnam

10
The War Remnants Museum was formerly called the Museum of American War Crimes. As the former name suggests, this museum presents the history of the Vietnam War (called the American War in Vietnam) from the perspective of the current Vietnam government. The museum was opened in 1975, not long after the country was reunified. The name was changed when the two countries normalized relations.
This museum has many grisly and horrific photos, and no attempt is made to show a balanced picture of the war.

It also has exhibits on the bombings, effects of Agent Orange, and dozens of reported atrocities done by the American soldiers and government. The War Remnants museum is one of those places that many Americans might wish to avoid because we don't like to be reminded of our failures, especially when on vacation. I felt the same way, and would not have gone it if the tour had not taken us there. However, now I am glad I visited the War Remnants Museum because of the Vietnamese perspective it gave me on this war. Learning the "other side of the story" is important, even though you have to recognize that it is distorted. It certainly makes you realize the role of governments and the news media in presenting and interpreting history.
