One way to personalize a gift, be it a piece of jewelry to celebrate an anniversary or other special occasion or a plaque to congratulate a friend or loved one for an achievement, is to add an inscription. There are several ideas that you can utilize for the perfect inscription. Its important to consider your relationship with the person to come up with an appropriate inscription. - Create a humorous or witty based inscription for a recipient, especially if you know that the person loves a good joke or witticism. This can be based on some humorous event in the recipient's life, or it can be a joke related to their profession. For example, if he owns a bookstore you might use Mark Twain's, "Outside of a dog, a book is a man's best friend. Inside a dog it's too dark to read."
- Find a line in a poem or quote that you think would work well with the type of gift and the occasion for which the gift is being given. For instance, for a plaque for a retiring English professor who is a friend, colleague or family member, use a line from his favorite poem or a quote from his favorite author.
- Highlight the special connection that you and the recipient have by adding a word or line that only the two of you would fully understand. This type of special-connection inscription is especially appropriate for anniversary gifts. For example, you could include your spouse's pet name in your inscription.
