Products for Refinishing Counters
- For laminate counters, a polyacrylic coating is one option for refinishing. Polyacrylic coatings, which are water-based, provide resistance to abrasion on your counters. The coating is best applied with a roller or small foam brush, with several coats usually needed. Polyacrylic coating products are glossy, with additives in the product that help create a matte appearance. Between each coat, sand the surface lightly with a 220-grit sandpaper to produce the best finish.
- Granite counters generally are created with acrylic surface finishes that create a thin barrier against water, other liquid splashes and stains. Granite is naturally porous and will absorb stains, including colored liquids as well as solids that are not quickly cleaned. Through use, the acryclic coating on granite counters will begin to thin and wear away. The surface, however, can be refinished by applying a liquid acrylic coating. Use a lint-free cloth to apply several coats, leaving one hour of drying time between coats. Once the proper finish is achieved, use a non-abrasive cloth to wipe the counter.
- Aliphatic acrylic polyurethane is a liquid product that can be used on many counter surfaces, and it is espcially effective when applied on wood or laminate. Aliphatic acrylic polyurethane is a mixture of colored resin with a catalyst. When mixed together, the product begins to harden. It is sprayed onto a cleaned and sanded counter surface, where it molds to the old counter. When dry, the counter will be non-porous so you will not have to be concerned about stains and spills discoloring the surface.
- Createastain, which is a water-based stain, can be used to refinish glass-like surfaces such as ceramic tile and porceleain. It also can be employed in order to change the appearance of laminate counters, giving them the look of marble or granite. Counters need to be lightly sanded and primed before Createastain is applied. A faux sponge is the best manner of application, and various colors can be added in stages to create a multi-colored look.
