The Mile-Long Barracks was built to be hurricane-proof, but not bomb-proof. The Japanese bombardment of the island reduced the buildings at Topside to rubble, but did not completely obliterate them.

The Barracks structure is only 1,520 feet long, but it was long enough to qualify as the world's longest barracks in its day.
