DIY Long-Term Food Storage
- 1). Gather all the foods that you plan to store long term. Items should be completely dry, without an oily base. For example, white sugar and white rice are good choices, but brown sugar and brown rice are quite moist and will end up going bad quickly. Canned foods are always an option, although they only last a few years. If you can, choose whole grains instead of preground flours, which can go bad after a few years.
- 2). Divide the foods into gallon-sized, plastic freezer bags. Open a 500cc oxygen-absorbing packet, drop it into the bag and immediately seal, pushing out extra oxygen as you seal.
- 3). Place all the sealed, gallon-sized freezer bags into separate 5-gallon buckets. Label the buckets with a permanent marker.
- 4). Snap the airtight lids on top of the 5-gallon buckets and store them in a cool, dark place. The ideal temperature is between 40 and 50 degrees Fahrenheit.
