Honda Motor Company Limited, a Japanese automobile company founded by Saichiro Honda, has production facilities in many countries. In India, Honda started production of cars in the year 1995 as a joint venture with Usha International. A factory in Noida was established in 1997. In 2012, Honda Motors brought all the shares of Usha International and formed Honda Cars India Limited.

The first model to come out of the Noida factory was Honda City. The City has undergone many facelifts and is still a favorite. The 2013 Honda City has a very high fuel economy of 26 kmpl for the diesel and 17.8 kmpl for the petrol version. Their VTEC engines which employ the variable valve timing and lift electronic control help to achieve better mileages for their vehicles.

In 2001, Honda Motors started producing the Accord. This 4.95 m long petrol car initially had good sales, though the price was around Rs 20 lakhs. Due to the low mileage, Honda stopped the production of the Accord in 2013. Meanwhile, the Civic that was launched in India in 2006 as a compact Sedan with a better fuel efficiency helped Honda to regain some of its lost ground. A new programmable electronic fuel injection technology helped in getting a better mileage of 10.8 to 14 kmpl with petrol. A new Honda Civic version with an iDTEC engine, already launched in Europe, is expected to come to India soon.

In 2009, Honda introduced their petrol car Jazz in the Indian market. This 1.2 litre engine, 3.9 m long car did well in the first year. But the rise in petrol prices forced them to discontinue its production. A better version in diesel is expected to be launched in November 2014. The 3.6 m long Brio was introduced in 2011 and gave a good performance on the roads with its 1.2 litre iVTEC engine, both with manual and auto transmission versions. The diesel version of the Brio priced at Rs 6 lakhs, approximately, gives a mileage of 22 kmpl on high ways. The Honda CRV which was launched in India in 2003 is now assembled here.

Honda Motors have been pioneers in research and in introducing new technologies in car design. Their anti-lock brake system, speed sensitive power steering and multi portal fuel injection have been followed by many other manufacturers. Their latest under 4 metre hatchback, Honda Amaze, launched in 2013 in petrol and diesel versions has already generated good interest among the Indian car lovers. With this €value for money' car priced at Rs 5 to 7 lakhs the HCIL hopes to gain much in the coming months.

The only hitch in their otherwise glorious history is the lower number of dealers when compared to Maruti and Hyundai.
