Play Slowly: When learning to play rock leads, I can't overemphasize the importance of learning your scales slowly.
I know it might sound like a contradiction with what I'm saying, however, you will find that the slower you play your scales, the faster of a soloist you will become.
The main reason this works is that while you are learning your scales at a slow pace (i.

) you are allowing your fingers to memorize the guitar scales.
You will also make less mistakes when practicing at a slower pace which will help you make less mistakes as you increase your practice speed.

Alternate Pick: Learn to alternate pick when practicing your scales.
By learning to alternate pick you will literally triple your soloing abilities.
Your first note will be played using what is called a down stroke.
The next note will be an up stroke.
Alternate each note plucking your guitar strings up and down.
This is basic alternate picking.

Utilize Pinky Power: Make sure you are practicing with your pinky.
It's very easy to learn certain scales with out using your pinky, however, the more of an in depth soloist you become, the more you will want to include your pinky to allow for even more quick scale fingerings that are just simply not available when only learning scales with 3 fingers.
Playing with all four fingers will give you a definite scale advantage over three fingered players.
