29
Training your Yorkshire terrier does not have to be an ongoing struggle.
Even though these little dogs are known for being feisty and stubborn, they have a sweet personality and are very smart as well.
The best way to start training your Yorkie is to have a focused approach, decide which areas you need to train in right away, and to have a schedule for when you will do this training.
This focused approach I am speaking of relates to you, not to your dog.
Remember that you are the human and have a better sense of where your dog is at in terms of being trained.
Your expectations must be realistic in terms of training your Yorkie.
These will primarily depend upon the age of your dog and the previous training you have done.
Make a written plan about what you would like to train your Yorkshire terrier to be able to do, and then focus only in those areas.
If housebreaking has been an ongoing concern, just working in that area with your training.
This is an area that takes more time and effort with a Yorkie than with many other breeds, so don't attempt to take on more than that one area.
On the other hand, if your dog is already housebroken you may want to work on basic commands such as sitting, staying, and rolling over on command.
These areas of dog training are more simple to teach, so you can challenge yourself to teach them during a few training sessions.
Making a training schedule will be crucial to the success you are hoping to achieve.
Dogs are more alert earlier in the day, so plan to do the bulk of your training before eight in the morning.
Also, you will need to reinforce what you are teaching, so schedule time every day, seven days a week, even if it is only for fifteen minutes.
Skipping a day or two will set your dog back, making you have to go back to the beginning to be guaranteed of any retentions of what you have taught.
As you can see, much thought and planning must go into training your dog.
If you are willing to do this you will be amazed at the progress that can be attained in just a couple of weeks.
Our dogs look to us for guidance with their behavior, so enjoy this process as much as possible.
Within a short time you will be glad you made this effort in training your Yorkshire terrier.
