About.com Rating

Chef'n has introduced new versions of their popular Switchit™ spatulas. These handy tools have dual ends which would make them very functional. They're also made of higher-heat grade silicone than most spatulas. I wanted to see just how handy these dual ended tools would be.

  • How the Switchits Performed

September 10, 2009 I thought the original Switchits were handy, but these dual-ended models take them to a new level. The most practical and the one I enjoy the most is the Spoon. From stirring in the skillet to serving - this Switchit Spoon goes well beyond what a traditional spatula can do and it's getting the most mileage. The new design makes this a very comfortable tool for the lefty in the house too.

The All-Purpose works great for anything you want to stir, scrape or mix, much like a functional spatula, but with the added bonus of the mini on the end. It's too flexible for turning eggs over, but it does work fine for pancakes and french toast.

The Slim's biggest triumph is scraping the inside of baby food jars, tomato paste tins and emptying the blender jar. Because it's narrow, it also works better than other silicone spatulas I've tried, for releasing a Bundt cake or muffins from non-stick pans.

I found the Spreader handy for more than applying icing on a cake. It easily spreads egg or chicken salad on bread or stirs mayo into a salad. Smaller than the All-Purpose, it worked well for any mixing, stirring and scraping in smaller pots or bowls.

For many tasks, I found the All-Purpose, Slim and Spreader often interchangeable; they all have a variety of uses. They clean up well and a big plus - they have a streamline design - there's no (detachable) handle or crevice where dirt/bacteria can accumulate.

    Overall Impression

I love the new dual-ended Chef'n silicone Switchits and found myself often turning one over, to make use of the other end while cooking or baking - so the small ends are very practical. These tools have a higher heat rating than most silicone tools, so I didn't have to worry about adjusting the heat when stirring in a pan or doing a stir-fry. I like the bright colors too - it gives them a cheery look.

This heat rating along with the handy dual ends give the entire Switchit collection an edge over other silicone spatula-like tools, when it comes to function and durability. They're a good buy and reasonably priced for silicone tools.

Buying tip: If you're buying more than one Switchit, choose a different color for each - it will give you a quick visual reference, so you can reach for the right one every time.
