How to Make Fabric Dragons

2
    • 1). Lie the fabric on the cutting board, with the fabric folded in half, right sides together, and the two rough salvage edges left together. Free-hand cut out a wavy snake shape with the rotary cutter. Free-hand cut out one connected set of bat-like wings, and two small dragon feet. You will now have two dragon body pieces, two dragon wing pieces, and four dragon feet cut out of the fabric. These will make one finished body piece, one finished wing-set piece, and two finished feet.

    • 2). Lie the interfacing on the cutting board. Take the one of the wing sets and two of the feet and pin them on the interfacing. Cut around the wings and dragon feet so that you have one interfacing version of the fabric shapes. In total you should have two dragon wing fabric pieces and one interfacing wing piece that will form one completed set of connected bat-like wings, along with four dragon feet and two interfacing feet pieces that will be two completed dragon feet.

    • 3). Unpin the interfacing from the fabric shapes and trim the interfacing shapes so they are approximately 3/8 of an inch smaller than the original. Lie the fabric shapes right-side down on an ironing board, and place the matching interfacing pieces shiny side down to the wrong side of the fabric shapes. Place the damp cloth over the shapes, and press the iron (on medium heat) over the interfacing. Press the iron down and hold for about 10 seconds. Do not rub the iron back and forth. Remove the wet cloth, and the interfacing will be fused to the dragon feet and wings.

    • 4). Turn on your sewing machine and prepare the thread.

    • 5). Pin the two halves of your dragon body right sides together. Pin the dragon wings and dragon feet right sides together. Place the pins around the border of the fabric shapes.

    • 6). Sew around the border of each of the dragon shapes, removing the pins as you go. Leave approximately a 1 inch opening at the end so that you have not stitched completely around the shapes. When you are sewing around the corners of your dragon shapes, manually put the needle in the down position, lift the foot, and reposition the fabric so that you are sewing in a straight line. Go slowly, especially around the corners.

    • 7). Turn the fabric shapes right-side out by pulling the fabric through the 1-inch opening you left. Use the crochet hook to push out the small corners or other small places that you cannot get to with your fingers. You will now have one dragon body, on dragon wing set, and two dragon feet.

    • 8). Sew shut the 1-inch opening on the dragon feet and dragon wings by hand using a needle and thread. Stuff the dragon body, and sew shut the 1-inch opening by hand.

    • 9). Sew the dragon feet and wings to the dragon body by hand. Sew on two buttons for eyes on the dragon's head.

Your dragon is now ready to be decorated. Sew on extra patches by hand, stitch on hand sewn details, or use fabric paint to add details to the dragon.
