How to Make a Popcorn Wall
- 1). Remove all furniture from the room or cover it with drop cloths. Mask the floor and any walls you aren't texturing with plastic sheeting and seal the edges with masking tape. If you apply the texture with a hopper gun, it will spray all over the room and stick to unprotected areas.
- 2). Wash the wall with a sponge and soapy water to remove dust, dirt and grease.
- 3). Apply three coats of drywall joint compound to drywall joints on the wall, using a putty knife. Allow the compound to dry between coats. Sand the entire surface of the wall after the third coat dries. If the wall is already finished, you can skip this step.
- 4). Prime the wall, using a medium-nap paint roller to cover the bulk of the wall and an angled brush to cut into edges. Allow the primer to dry thoroughly before painting. A fresh coat of primer and paint will help popcorn texture bond better to the surface, even if the wall is already painted.
- 5). Paint the wall with flat interior paint. Use the same color of paint you plan to use with the popcorn texture. If you don't want to paint the popcorn texture, use white paint.
- 6). Mix the popcorn texture in a bucket with paint or water according to package directions. Let the texture sit for three hours to soak up moisture.
- 7). Stir the texture with a paint stirrer.
- 8). Set an air compressor to 30 pounds of pressure and connect it to the drywall hopper. Skip this step if you are rolling your texture rather than blowing it out.
- 9). Fill the drywall hopper with texture and spray it evenly onto your wall or roll it on with a medium nap roller.
- 10
Slide a trowel over the texture to smooth and even out the surface.
