How to Get Rid of Judgments on Your Credit Profile
- 1). Request, review and print your free annual credit report through Annual Credit Report.com's website. Look for the public record section of your free credit report and find the expired, incomplete or incorrect judgment you wish to remove.
- 2). Type a dispute letter requesting the removal of the judgment from your credit file. Explain that your state's statute of limitations absolves you of the debt and request the prompt removal of the information from your credit file. The credit bureau is allowed 30 days to investigate the validity of the judgment and issue a report on its findings.
- 3). Submit documents that support your claim that the judgment is incomplete or incorrect. For example, if you've paid the judgment and have record of your payment, mail your supporting documents (such as receipts, pay records, bank statements and court documents) to the bureau for review.
- 4). Review the credit bureau's report for its determination. If the judgment is invalid, it will no longer appear on your credit report. If it is valid, it will remain as a valid item.
- 5). Settle the debt if it cannot be removed from your file. Offer the judgment creditor a settlement. Agree to a payment amount and define the dates of payment and any provisions related to the settlement. Your provisions may require the judgment creditor to report the debt as "paid in full," for example.
- 6). Send in your settlement payment as agreed upon and wait 30 days for your judgment creditor to report the judgment as "paid in full."
