Pattern Alopecia

• One reason for hair loss in an American Water Spaniel is pattern alopecia. It is a genetic disorder that in this particular breed causes hair loss on the neck, thighs and tail. Other breeds experience hair loss in other patterns.
  
  

Hypothyroidism

• Hypothyroidism is another reason for hair loss in an American Water Spaniel. Hypothyroidism creates a slower metabolism, with lack of energy, and hair loss is a side effect. This can be treated with thyroid medication prescribed by a veterinarian.
  
  

Allergies

• Allergies can result in another form of hair loss in American Water Spaniels. They may be prone to different types of allergies, causing them to scratch themselves until the hair is gone.
  
  

Fleas

• Fleas can also lead to hair loss in an American Water Spaniel. Intolerance of fleas is known as a flea allergy and the dog will scratch with just one flea on its body.
  
  

Bathing

• American Water Spaniels are used to retrieve in the water. Their coats are naturally oily to protect their skin. Frequent bathing of the dog removes these oils and can cause skin irritation and possible allergic reactions leading to hair loss. Only bathe an American Water Spaniel when necessary.
  
  

Prevention/Solution

• As soon as you notice any hair loss from your dog, take him to a veterinarian. The veterinarian can help you tackle the issue of hair loss.
