How to Find Shed Whitetail Deer Antlers in the South
- 1). Use the website for Wildlife Services located at the bottom of the page to contact the Department of Fish and Game in the southern states that you plan to visit. Call or email the local F&G contact center to ask them where to find whitetail deer and what months the deer are most likely to shed their antlers.
- 2). Visit Google Maps to search for and print a terrain map of your hunting area. Circle those areas that were advised by the F&G Department. This will help you focus your search in the best places. In southern areas, whitetail deer are likely to nest at the snowline instead of in regions that are fully covered.
- 3). Search around trees and thick brush where antlers are likely to have snagged or been removed by rubbing. Whitetail will often scratch the sides of trees and mounds to shake the antlers free. Tree lines are much higher in the South, making it necessary to visit higher elevations to find rubbed trunks.
- 4). Look for nesting areas that have flattened grass and many tracks. Follow tracks, which often lead to watering holes. Antlers are often shed near watering holes. Keep in mind that deer trails in the south may be very wide because the lack of snow allows deer more mobility than in snow-covered areas.
- 5). Explore softer ground for sheds in the south.
- 6). Keep an eye out for fences and ditches. Whitetail deer will rub off the antlers in the dirt and or lose them when they leap over small hills or ditches. Don't cross fences, however, as they may be a sign that you are leaving public property and trespassing on private lands.
