Customs

• When you send a package from the United States to Canada, you will need to declare it through customs. Before you seal the package, make a list of the contents, because you will be asked to write down everything you are sending. The list doesn't need an exact count, for instance, to say "13 pieces of candy," but it does need to say "candy." Know the estimated monetary value of the package. Gifts valued at more than $50 may be subject to duties and taxes.
  
  Usually, the package will not be inspected, as long as you have written down on the customs form what is being sent to Canada. However, if something seems strange about your package, it may be opened. Keep this in mind as you pack up your gift, so it is not damaged should it have to be opened for inspection.
  
  

Perishables

• Take care when sending perishables from the United States to Canada. Depending on your point of origin and the package's final destination, it can take anywhere from three days to more than a week to arrive. Some perishables, like fresh bread or baked goods, might go bad in that time. Seal your homemade treats carefully and pay extra for the shortest delivery time.
  
  

Not Allowed

• Make note that some things--including fresh fruit and vegetables--cannot be mailed to Canada from the United States. Other items are susceptible to high taxes and fees, and might not be allowed to be sent to certain provinces. These include alcohol and gifts worth over $1,000. Gasoline, drugs and fireworks are among the items that cannot be sent in any packages through the mail.
