How to Tie in a Hungarian Partridge Feather
- 1). Place the hook in the vise. Wrap the thread, using the bobbin, to approximately 1/8 of the total length of the hook shank from the eye of the hook.
- 2). Select the appropriate size of feather by measuring the fibers against the length of the hook shank. The longest fibers on the feather should measure to be about the same length as the hook shank. Strip the bottom portion of the feather so only the top 3/4 of the feather contains fibers and the bottom 1/4 is an empty stem.
- 3). Place the stem of the feather against the hook shank near the eye of the hook and wrap over the stem four times. Pinch the tip of the feather and wrap it over and away from yourself three times, working the feather towards the eye of the hook. With each wrap, slick the fibers back toward the bend of the hook. Tie the feather down with four good wraps.
- 4). Finish the fly with a whip finish tool or half-hitch knots.
- 1). Place the hook in the vise. Wrap the thread to approximately 1/5 of the total length of the hook shank from the eye of the hook. This method is applied after the body of the fly has already been tied and is used for wings on a nymph.
- 2). Select a feather with fibers that are 1/2 the length of the hook shank in the middle of the feather. Strip the feather to the middle. Pick out a section of feather with 6 to 10 good fibers on either side, and leave the stem below it. Pinch back all the fibers above the ones you selected so there is an even V-shape in the feather with good fibers on each side.
- 3). Place the V-shaped feather on the top of the fly with the stem facing the eye of the hook. Wrap four times over the feather just above the V-shaped fibers. Advance the thread in front of the feather and finish the thorax of the fly with material of your choice. Take the stem of the partridge feather, pull it over the thorax, and wrap over it tightly four times.
- 4). Complete the thorax and wing case of the fly and finish with a whip finish tool or half-hitch knots.
