Your child learns by how your child's brain takes in and processes information.
Some kids learn by just listening to their teacher speak, while others may need a more hands-on experience and others, who learn by observing.
What we see in some classrooms are lectures with worksheets - a one-dimensional approach that targets less than 10% of the students' learning styles.
What we see in many of the teaching programs in colleges and universities, is a push, and a focus on multi-dimensional learning.
This means that there are a number of ways to learn, but finding the most effective method for all learners will be most difficult to incorporate throughout the day.
Students learn by doing, hearing a lecture, taking notes and reviewing them, observing a methodology or sequence, or by finding patterns to relate to material or experiences they are familiar.
Envision a classroom that uses toys, cards, outdoor activities, and simple science experiments to teach concepts such as sorting, comparing, weighing, problem solving, attention and focus.
You may be thinking that your child is just learning to talk and these things do not apply.
Actually, they all apply.
A teacher who is observant, analytic and has a strong sense of discernment is able to recognize the strengths and learning styles of each child.
Different ways that children learn are by hearing, doing, watching, seeing, or a combination of some or all.
Children with special needs need to retrain the damaged or destroyed parts of their brain.
Similarly, a stroke victim must retrain their brain to relearn the basic concepts of articulation, sounds, phonetics and speech.
Relearning a new way of solving a problem is like finding a different way to commute to work each day.
The messages that are sent to the brain are interrupted because the path leads to a dead end.
In the case of commuting, you are finding a new way due to construction or traffic.
Part of rehabilitation therapy is retraining the brain to create new patterns of learning.
The therapy seeks to connect the old information with new information by using parts of the brain that either haven't been used enough or have never been used.
First hand experience, it is difficult, trying, tedious and frustrating.
For the parent, it is overwhelming to watch your child struggle; it brings you to tears.
Sometimes, the struggles we face as parents help us grow.
The strength that comes from struggle, gives us a persistence that empowers us to help and encourage others facing the same difficulties.
