How to Troubleshoot the 2007 Yamaha R6

26

    Fuel

    • 1). Check the fuel level in the fuel tank if the bike is no longer running or starting. If there is an adequate amount of fuel, move on to the compression system check.

    • 2). Refuel with premium unleaded gasoline if gas tank is empty.

    • 3). Turn the fuel cock to "RES" and restart the engine if there is a small amount of fuel. Move to the next section if the engine still won't start.

    Compression

    • 1). Use the electric starter.

    • 2). Ensure the compression is between 140 and 160 pounds in each cylinder using a compression gauge. If it is, the compression system is working correctly.

    • 3). Take the bike to a Yamaha dealer for inspection of the compressions system if there is less than 140 pounds of compression in any of the cylinders.

    Ignition

    • 1). Remove the spark plugs to check the ignition system.

    • 2). Take the R6 in for repairs if the electrodes are dry.

    • 3). Dry the electrodes with a cloth if they are wet.

    • 4). Replace the spark plugs if the originals appear to be damaged. Yamaha recommends NGK CR10EK plugs in the '07 R6 Owner's Manual.

    • 5). Set the spark plug gap to between 0.024 to 0.028 inches.

    • 6). Operate the electric starter. Move on to the battery check if the engine still does not start.

    Battery

    • 1). Use the starter again, this time listening to the engine turn over.

    • 2). Take the bike to a Yamaha dealer for inspection if the engine turns over quickly, as this indicates that the battery is good and that there is some other problem in need of repair.

    • 3). Check all battery lead connections if the battery turns over slowly.

    • 4). Charge the battery to 12 volts.

    • 5). Replace the battery with a 12 volt 8.6 ampere-hour if the original appears defective.

    Radiator

    • 1). Check the radiator system if the engine is overheating. Wait for the engine to cool down before beginning this check.

    • 2). Inspect the coolant level in the reservoir and radiator.

    • 3). Start the engine if the coolant is at an adequate level. Take the R6 to the shop if it overheats again.

    • 4). Check for cooling system leakage if the coolant level is low.

    • 5). Have a Yamaha dealer repair the cooling system if leakage is present.

    • 6). Add coolant and restart the engine if leakage is not present. Take to a Yamaha dealer if the R6 still overheats.
