How to Carve a Halloween Watermelon
- 1). Cut the watermelon in half and place each face down on a platter.
- 2). Peel each watermelon so that the green rind is removed. Continue to peel away at the white rind until it's very thin and almost pink -- it doesn't have to be even.
- 3). Cut a line about 1-inch deep down the center of the melon, then cut swirls on either side with the tip of the knife to suggest brains. At this point, you're not carving, just drawing with the tip of the knife.
- 4). Go back over the lines with the knife, this time angling the blade so that you cut out a V-shaped trench about 1/4 to1/2 inch deep over the entire design.
- 5). Round the edges of the trenches with the edge of the blade for a more realistic look.
- 6). Drip two or three drops of food coloring into the trenches on the top of the brain carving, if desired. The pool of juices around the watermelon will turn red. For more realistic looking blood, mix five drops of red food coloring with one drop each of blue and green.
