Child Custody Battle? Start Here!

4
If you've decided that you would like custody of your child, then you're in for a battle.
Before you begin that fight, you might want to read the few paragraphs below.
It just might mean the difference between winning and losing.
Most importantly, get yourself a good lawyer.
Find one who specializes in child custody cases.
Get the best lawyer you can afford, the listen to him or her.
Ask where your weaknesses are, and what you can do to build a stronger case.
Don't bash your ex.
It doesn't look good to the judge, and it isn't fair anyways.
After all, at one point you loved this person enough to marry him or her and have a child.
Your spouse didn't turn into a horrible person overnight, and neither did you.
Going through a divorce doesn't give you the right to air your dirty laundry in public, so keep things as civil as possible.
You can tell the negatives about your spouse, but be sure to include the positives as well.
By the same token, don't act like you're perfect either.
Be honest about your weaknesses when they come to light.
Own up to your problems and point out how you are working on improving.
This works much better than trying to appear as though you have it all together.
We all have our faults.
Don't try to hide yours.
Finally, and most people don't think of doing this, learn as much as you can about the judge who is going to be presiding over the proceedings.
All judges try to be as fair as possible, but they still have preferences.
Some judges favor men and some favor women.
Some will be more inclined to approve joint custody agreements, which gives you a greater incentive to work out an agreement with your spouse.
If you don't know your judge, you are at a disadvantage.
