The Faceless of the Facebook: How Your Social Media Profile Can Harm Your Business

26
One of the biggest worries that small business owners have in the 21st century is not actually whether they have the right image, the right suit, or even the right phone which makes all the right noises on a tube train, but their social presence.
Did you know, that more people consider their social media profile more important that their real one - the real one, is, of course, the one when you look in the mirror? The next time you hook up with your pals at the weekend, do a little experiment - look at their social media profiles on Facebook and Twitter and any other site they might be registered on that you know about (don't become too much of a detective here, you're not stalking them!) And view it objectively.
Look at the photo, what do they say about themselves, look at the interaction they are engaged with, their blog and all the other pages that they use to symbolise themselves as a figure in business.
Now, don't worry if your friends are not high flying merchant bankers or stock brokers, in fact, this experiment is better on someone who has a craft business or similar.
Write down what you see.
So, when you rock up the pub or the café at the weekend for your weekly natter, take a look at who greets you when you see them.
Do they shape up or dull themselves down face to face or over the net? It is surprising how many you will know who, to be honest, you probably wouldn't recognise if come across them unknowingly on line.
Now, this is far from saying that everyone in business on the net is a liar - far from it! All this is doing is pointing out the way we portray ourselves over the net, is usually very different from the person we are in real life.
It is easy to do, trust me, I have had plenty of people stop me at vintage fairs and say, 'oh my goodness! You are not what I expected!' Once you get one of those lines, you will begin to wonder who you really are! If it's getting you the business then great, read no further, however, if it's not what you want people to see, then think again and look a bit deeper into the posts that you post on the net.
The simplicity of blogs They're funny aren't they? These millions of pages out there attached to websites and more websites like little sea urchins or limpets along for the ride.
But it they are highly valuable, not just for buoyancy but they are the looking glass to your Alice in Wonderland.
There you are, doing your business through your site, adding this product and seeing that person over the net and rediscovering the act of relationship building without actually seeing who you are dealing with but it's all the name of business, and if it gets you the dosh, then no one is getting hurt.
But, what if you do have a business that DOES mean to see people face to face? Take for instance, the stall holder.
The lady in the pink who makes jams at the weekends and sells them on her stall.
During the week, she is busy looking after her husband, bringing up her three children, running a house, all on a very limited budget.
She loves humour and watches as many comedy shows she can on the telly.
She loves watching Danny Kaye films and can give you the complete biography on Lana Turner.
She can knit blindfolded and every Wednesday morning, she takes some cakes and tea over to the very frail lady across the road who has no friends or family.
Our jam making lady is the only person she sees each week apart from the district nurse.
Our lady works very hard and the little business she has at the weekends is her life, the one thing that makes her heart pump from Monday to Friday and most of all, she loves seeing new people, seeing friends she has made in the town hall market each Saturday and she loves making jam! Noticed anything about that story? She sells jam - yes! But, she has a whole other life beyond her business.
She is compassionate, thoughtful, caring for people who are not related to her and she goes out of her way to make sure that the world around her runs smoothly.
She is highly intelligent, well read and very entertaining.
To her customers, she is the lady who makes jams - nothing else.
Let me ask you a question.
How much do you know about the small businesses you buy from? Do you know the people behind them? Would you think more of them as people, if you knew more about their lives, or would it not matter? It is a well-known fact, that if you know someone as a person, not necessarily inside out but you know how they sound when they laugh, you know that they like Danny Kaye films (optional) and because of this, you chat to your friends about them, they make you smile, and somehow the day is a bit better when you can go and see your 'friend' who sells you jam on a Saturday.
Not everyone can be making jams on a Saturday, and not everyone needs a pot each week! But think about it - would your customers buy more from you and possibly attract more customers to you if they know that you were more than just a supplier? With a blog, you can talk about the things you like, things that have happened to you during the week, things you have seen on the telly and want to share with the readers.
Business on the net is about more than just doing business.
It is about forming relationships, even though distant, that customer now knows you are a human being! So don't dart off and start writing about your memoires or this will have the adverse effect.
But open up a little, share something with your customers, and they will keep coming back, and what's more, they will bring their friends too...
