Information on Foam Fire Extinguishers

1

    Function

    • A foam fire extinguisher consists of a cylinder containing pressurized chemicals, usually sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) or potassium bicarbonate, with an attached squeeze handle held in place by a pin. When the pin is released and the handle squeezed, the pressurized chemicals are released through a short hose, in the form of foam. The foam smothers the fire and prevents it from being fueled by oxygen.

    Usage

    • Fire extinguishers can put out fires while they're still small or contained, such as in a cooking vessel, wastebasket or other enclosed space. To use a foam fire extinguisher, pull the pin, aim the hose at the base of the fire, squeeze the handle and sweep the extinguisher slowly and evenly across the base of the flame.

    Safety

    • When using a fire extinguisher, safety should always be the first consideration. Attempt to use a fire extinguisher only when the fire is not rapidly expanding and where there is a clear escape route. Be sure to check and replace foam fire extinguishers routinely, as recommended by the manufacturer.
