Windows Washing: Accesses, Tools And Perils

1
Windows are an important part of a building. They provide natural lighting, vanity to the building and room, as well as make the room seem roomier. However, if windows are plagued with dirt, they lose all the vanity they offer. Therefore, people regularly have their windows cleaned either by them or they hire another person to do their window washing

There are several ways to access windows for cleaning including:

Ladders are available in a variety of sizes ranging from single step to lofty heights of steps. Many local regulations allow ladders to access the building windows for washing or cleaning purposes.

Scaffolding, which should not be confused with a suspended work platform, is actually temporary work platforms installed for window cleaning.

Aerial work platforms are the machines designed and configured to give the workers an access to those portions of buildings that are generally considered inaccessible.

Suspended platforms, contrary to the temporary scaffolding, are the devices configured for descent or ascent of cable by motorized or mechanical work platforms. The various forms of suspended platforms are:

* Scaffold as an access work platform for one or more persons with motor-driven or manual devices for ascending and descending using a rope. Scaffolds are generally suitable on skyscrapers or other high-altitude buildings. These are assembled from material suitable for architecture and according to the nature of work.

* A Boatswain's Chair is a work platform suitable for a single person, and it is designed for abseiling down a building. The rope used for supporting the platform is generally fastened to the roof structure, while connecting points and counterweight structures are designed for additional support.

Windowsills often provide the only direct access method to a window obtained through egress from inside the building. This method is still used on the Empire State Building.

Some of the tools used for window washing are:

* Chamois and scrim is a material made in United Kingdom, which is used to slacken off and remove dust, and then it is buffed with a scrim or cheesecloth.

* Water-fed brush are made with diverse varieties of telescopic pole being attached at the upper edge with water jets and a brush fed by commercial or domestic water outlet.

Water and chemicals are mixed together and different tools such as a cloth-covered handle or a brush is dipped into that chemical solution and used to clean the window glass. After that, a squeegee is used to remove the water mixture and dirt from glass.

However, with window cleaning, there are different risks and threats, which include slipping on soap or water and falling from an elevated stature. There is no regulation or government licensing system in some areas, which means anyone can be a window cleaner. Window cleaning is considered as one of the most perilous jobs. A large number of window cleaners become injured every year and some may even die. Therefore, it is of paramount importance that the window cleaner should take care of their personal security.
